What you need to know

A WHMIS GHS program is required in all Prince Edward Island workplaces that may have controlled products. Employers must provide workers with information regarding safety and health hazards in their workplaces. Employees have the right to know of potential dangers that can affect their work and health.

WHMIS GHS standards are coordinated between three levels of government: federal, provincial, and territorial. Supplier labeling and MSDS requirements fall under the federal Hazardous Products Act.

Each province and territory establishes WHMIS GHS employer requirements within its own jurisdiction. In Prince Edward Island, these requirements are set out in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Chapter O-1.01 (R.S.P.E.I. 1988, Cap. 0-1). The Department of Environment, Labour and Justice provides provincial enforcement of the WHMIS GHS regulations.
